Have a Contract with Your Students

Having a contract with your students is extremely important. You need this to make sure the parents and the students understand how your business works. Here is an example of a contract I use.

Contract for Music Lessons

This is a contract that I, (student/guardian name) ______________________________, have entered into an agreement to take (instrument) ___________________________ lessons from (teacher’s name) _________________.
Lessons will be on [day of week]________________ at [time] __________ for 30 min/1hour
for the amount of $______________________.

___ I understand that payment is due at the beginning of the month.
___ I understand that it is my responsibility to reimburse the teacher for the purchase of all books and materials.
___ I agree that if I decide to cancel my lessons for any reason I will inform the teacher in writing with a two-week notice.
___ I understand that if I am sick or unable to make the lesson, I will contact the teacher immediately to reschedule the missed lesson.  Only one make up will be issued in a (week/month) _______________ period.
___ I understand that No Call/No Shows of the lesson will not be made up.
___ I understand that if I am going on vacation or need to reschedule a lesson, I will need to inform the teacher in writing a minimum of two weeks in advance, so that arrangements may be made accordingly.
___ If you miss a lesson that cannot be made up, you will still be charged for that lesson.
___ I understand that the recommended practice period is for a minimum of 30 minutes each day.

I, ______________________________________________, understand and agree to the above terms and conditions.

Signature: _______________________________________________

Date: ________________________________

Parent’s Signature: _________________________________________
(For students under 18)

A copy will be retained in the student’s file.

This will give you a starting point if you have never thought about a contract or maybe need to update the one you are currently using.
